Everyone obviously repeats outfits in day-to-day life. We all can’t be celebrities, with clothes being sent over to our doorstep for the next big event. Each of us has a set number of clothes to choose from, which we (not so) strategically purchase over the course of our lives and stock up in our closets. The regular pieces often include the basic white tee, blue jeans, a simple shift dress, sneakers, ballerina flats, to name a few. As a result, these are the items we turn to on a daily basis, almost like a uniform. Now the key to repeating this uniform usually comes down to experimenting with accessories, but there happens to be another way that can instantly elevate your look too.
Layering is a way of dressing using many garments that are worn on top of each other. Of course, it’s one of the easiest and most creative methods to make your outfit look finished and well thought out. Unfortunately, given the tropical weather of India, jackets can’t be worn all the time (save for the extremely chilly movie theatres and malls). Thankfully, there is a solution! Increasingly, outerwear has been available in all kinds of shapes and forms in various light fabrics, with sleeveless options as well!
The looks I’m sharing today should give you an idea of how the same outfit – a black tank top and blue ripped jeans – can look completely different, simply by changing the outerwear!
Trench coats are smart and chic at the same time; perfect for day-to-night wear. However, it doesn’t make sense to wear thick coats in the perpetually humid weather of Mumbai. Luckily for me, I found a light, sleeveless version of the trench coat dress. I chose to pair it with my tank top and jeans, but you can even wear it with a shift or A-line dress.
Ear jackets are an edgy yet feminine accessory. For this reason, I end up wearing them a lot more than other types of earrings. In this look, the blingy ear jackets were complemented with a silver cuff on one hand and a delicate bracelet with ring on the other. Donning a statement timepiece is another way I often like to accessorize.
As for the makeup, I opted for a bright pink lip colour and a generous dose of mascara.
For the second look, I switched to outerwear that’s more evening appropriate. Again, this kimono jacket can be donned with a dress too – I would probably go for a black or grey fitted dress. In fact, it could even look fabulous with a cute tee and pair of shorts. You know, that’s what the best thing about outerwear is! The options are often so versatile – you can go crazy experimenting with outfit combinations!
In both looks, I wore the same shoes – my favourite suede block heels. Without a doubt, they’re one of those rare pairs of heels that are comfortable AND stylish at the same time.
